Childhood Vision Screening
Early detection, and correction of vision problems helps children to learn in school. All children entering kindergarten are required by state law to have a vision screening done by their primary care provider before the start of the school year. If a child fails the vision screening, he or she must have a comprehensive eye exam done by an eye doctor (ophthalmologist or optometrist). The child’s primary care provider may also refer a child for a comprehensive eye exam for other reasons related to the child’s development. If a child has a comprehensive eye exam, the eye doctor must give the parent or guardian a written report of the results of the eye exam and also send the results to both the child’s school and the child’s primary care provider. Vision screening is also required in the first (1st), second (2nd), third (3rd), fourth (4th) and fifth (5), grades. These screenings are provided at school by the school nurse. However, if a parent presents the school physician or school nurse-teacher with evidence that the same screening was done in the previous twelve (12) months by a primary care provider, ophthalmologist or optometrist, the child is exempt from the screening requirement for that school year. Saving Sight for Students VSP certificates are available from the school nurse for students who may need an eye exam and glasses. Please contact Mrs. DiCenso if you need a certificate. It is so important for children to wear their glasses every day at school. If possible, the teachers can keep them on their desk in a case so they will have them in school. |
Hearing Screenings are done every year for students in grades K-3 by the State hearing Center at the RI School for the Deaf. This year the screenings were done in early October. If your child received a referral for further hearing evaluation, please contact your child's pediatrician or the RI state hearing Center @ 222-3525
Dental Screenings are a state mandated screening. Our School Dentist is Dr. Resnevic. He was here at Leo Savoie on Monday, Nov. 17 to do quick exams on all students who did not return documentation that they have seen a dentist this year. If your child received a notice, make an appointment with your child's regular dentist for an evaluation or return documentation that they have had dental care. For any questions concerning any of these screenings, contact Mrs. DiCenso @ 767-4822
